This information is being shared with you about 3 black Canadian authors who have organized the following event which happens tonight in case you are interested in attending with your child.

Did you know only 4 #BlackCanadians #kidlitcreators have traditionally-published #picturebooks in #Canada in 2021?  Well, 3 of us decided to team up and present the PRE-KWANZAA PYJAMA BOOK PARTY on December 9, 2021 at 7pm ET.

Terry Fox Run at Silver Stream

Our 16^th Annual Terry Fox Run!    

Terry Fox represented the best that Canadians have to offer. He was an example of courage, humility, determination, and perseverance. From a young age he exemplified these attributes that made him an inspiration for not only Canada, but the entire world. The Silver Stream Community has also shown its incredible generosity again this year.  Our fundraising goal of $700.00 was met, and far surpassed any of our expectations.  In fact Silver Stream Public School raised an impressive $1176.00 this year!!! 

We are grateful to each and every donor.  Your giving spirit makes a difference as we help provide resources for the Terry Fox Foundation and the fight against cancer.  As the years progress, it is our next generation of students that will be the ones to continue Terry’s fight and lead this worthy cause towards his dream of a world without cancer.

Welcome Back Families!

Dear Families,

We have had a successful start to our school year over the last 4 days! It is SO wonderful to see so many of our students back in person again! We have missed having a full school very much!

The teachers are getting back into the swing of things while at the same time learning to teach within a hybrid learning classroom. It is not easy to engage both the face-to-face students and the students learning from home. Our teachers are amazing as they learn to accommodate for all students!

A big thank you to our parents/guardians for working as partners with our teachers and being patient with all the changes!

Our students are learning all the safety protocols for Covid such as hand sanitizing in and out of the classroom, keeping a safe distance, wearing masks all day, etc. They are doing it very well and learning all the other classroom routines as well! 

We are all looking forward to having a great year as we move forward during these unprecedented times!

Please remember to do the student screening and confirmation form before your child comes to school each day. This is very important.

Wellness Week (March 15-19)

 

Next Week is Silver Stream Wellness Week!

Next week (March 15-19), students at our school will have a chance to engage in activities that promote wellness, self-esteem and resilience. It will not be a typical week while students do activities related to wellbeing such as visual arts, nature walks, music and dance, STEM challenges, making of "worry boxes," learning to use a compass, whole-school fitness activities, virtual field trips and Thursday movies. There will be a wellness theme for each day:

1. Monday: Gratitude Day
2. Tuesday: Mindful Breathing Day
3. Wednesday: Outside Mindfulness Day
4. Thursday: Positive Self Affirmations Day
5. Friday: Spread Gratitude Day

We are thankful to the intermediate student wellness committee and several teachers who worked very hard together to organize and bring this special week to our students!

Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy

The York Region District School Board is committed to championing equity and inclusivity. In response to continued evidence of anti-Black racism in Canadian institutions, including in education, the Board has co-developed an anti-Black racism strategy. The Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy: Creating anti-racist and Black-affirming learning and working environments was co-developed by York Region Black community leaders, YRDSB staff and in consultation with students. The launch of the strategy marks a coordinated effort to address anti-Black racism at the Board. On March 8, 2021 students, staff and families are invited to the virtual Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy launch event featuring guest presenter Robyn Maynard. The program will examine anti-Black racism in educational institutions and unveil the Board’s strategy.  The systemic nature of anti-Black racism requires that school boards act proactively to support equitable access to quality education and opportunities for all students, and to challenge the marginalization of Black students, staff and families.  Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy launch event On March 8, 2021 students, staff, families and community members are invited to the virtual Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy launch event featuring guest presenter Robyn Maynard. Register for the event. The program will examine anti-Black racism in educational institutions and unveil the Board’s strategy on how to move forward.  A copy of the strategy will be made available to the public on March 8th.

Report It

 

Our schools should be safe, welcoming and inclusive places for everyone. It is important that students know what to do if they witness or experience inappropriate behaviour or incidents of hate or discrimination. 

• There may be situations when you can safely step in and intervene and help. 
• Talk to an adult at school, family member or other trusted adult. 
• Report the event without the person involved knowing using our online reporting tool, Report It.  

 

Report It lets you share information about inappropriate student behaviour or incidents of hate or discrimination. You can use the online form to report:

• bullying, drugs, cheating, vandalism, harassment, violence or any other inappropriate behaviour 
• incidents of discrimination or hate, including anti-Indigenous racism, ableism, anti-Asian racism, anti-Black racism, antisemitism, classism, homophobia, Islamaphobia, sexism, transphobia or other forms of hate

 

You can report events that happen at school, at school-related events, online or off school property if it negatively affects a student or the school climate. You can also choose to make a report anonymously. 

 

Complete reports are shared with the school to investigate and respond. 

 

Acts of discrimination, hate and bullying are never acceptable.  Using the Report It tool is a way of standing up for each other and for ourselves.
