Happy Summer!

Dear families,

Character is so important, and Silver Stream is etched in my memory as a school of caring people and dedicated staff.

Your children are respectful, kind and thoughtful people because of you.  They learn what they live.  You are our partners in education. Thank you for the opportunity and privilege to teach your children.

I too, am graduating, after 33 years in school.  I am grateful for the opportunity to have been placed as Principal at Silver Stream.  It is a wonderful school and I am appreciative of having had the pleasure of working with the staff and supportive families in this community.  I am retiring with a smile and a warmed heart.

On behalf of all the staff at Silver Stream,  we wish all of our families a safe and fun summer!

The school office will close on Friday June 30 at 3:30pm and will re-open on Monday August 28.

The First Day of School (Sept. 5) procedures were included in your child's report card envelope.

Sincerely,
Carol Takagi
Principal

Dear families,
I am so fortunate to have spent the last four years as Vice Principal at Silver Stream.  The students, families and staff have been wonderful to work with and support.  The children are a reflection of the kindness and caring of our parents, and to have had the opportunity to work with you as partners, has been a privilege.  I couldn’t have asked for a better place to end my career!  I wish everyone at Silver Stream a safe and happy summer.

Remembering you with fondness,

Ann Gnoinski
Vice Principal

EID ~ Wishing our families a happy celebration.

To all those who celebrate Eid-ul-Fitron behalf of the staff at Silver Stream, we would like to wish you and your families a very happy celebration.

Eid-ul-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Muslim calendar, and marks the end of the month of Ramadan. On this day, Muslims who had been observing Ramadan break the fast and celebrate its conclusion.

The day traditionally begins early with a prayer ceremony at the community mosque. Since this is a day to celebrate the renewal of one's commitment to Islam, people may wear new clothes as a symbol of fresh beginnings. Families typically visit one another and exchange good wishes, hugs and handshakes and homes are often decorated to reflect the festive atmosphere of this special day.

This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First NationsInuit and Métis peoples on this longest day of the year, the summer solstice.

Reminder: Early Dismissal on Thurs. June 29

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being.  On Thursday, June 29, 2017, an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day.  These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success.

As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 29, 2017 only.  Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:05am.  Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time.  Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

Congratulations Eco Team!

Congratulations to Silver Stream and our EcoTeam for receiving the level of SILVER in the certification process.  Our Eco Team has worked hard this year to create messages about the need to reduce, reuse and recycle to protect our planet.  They have educated our school about the waste generated in using water bottles and sold Silver Stream reusable water bottles with all proceeds going towards raising money for planting another shade tree for our school yard.

With the addition of the Swiss Chalet lunch program this year, our eco team worked to educate our students about the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of the packaging and encouraged our students through announcements and visits to the classroom to take their containers home and reuse them.

As part of the certification process our teachers also need to provide evidence of their lessons and activities that support environmental initiatives and understanding.

Thank you to Ms. Din-Lovinescu, Ms. Sarcevic and Ms. Mikelsteins for your time in supporting our students this year.

Message from our Trustee Carol Chan

As we near the end of the school year, I want to thank you for all that you do to strengthen our schools and communities. This is a good time to celebrate your child’s achievements over the past year.

One of our goals in the Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan is to “continuously increase student achievement and well-being through a culture and caring and learning.” That includes a culture that emphasizes engagement and positive relationships among all the members of the school community – students, staff members, families and community members.

You, as parents/guardians, are our most important partners when it comes to education. The support you have provided to your child throughout this past school year will help to strengthen our schools and make a difference to your child’s learning.

I encourage you to continue engaging your child in learning throughout the summer, and to help them to see the connections between what they are learning in school and the world around them. There are so many opportunities to do this over the summer, whether that’s planning a budget with your child, enjoying the natural beauty in York Region, reading a book or visiting local sites. Whatever your plans are this summer, I wish you all a successful end to the school year, and a safe and enjoyable summer.

Carol Chan
