YRDSB Policies and Procedures

Policies and procedures govern the operation of the Board and our school. To ensure they remain current, the Board reviews policies and procedures on a regular cycle. Seeking feedback from staff and community members, including parents/guardians, is an important part of the review process.

All policies available for comment are sent to school council chairs, and are posted on the Board website along with information about how to provide feedback. The policies and proposals currently available for comment include        the following policies with investigative components:
o   Professional Misconduct and Progressive Discipline
o   Respectful Workplaces and Learning Environments
o   Supporting Community Concerns

·      A proposal for next steps on the process for addressing concerns raised by students, staff and community members.

Junior Girls' Basketball Tryouts on Thursday at lunchtime

Thanks to our teachers  Ms. Stamatopoulos and Ms. Panchal for your time in coaching.

Fit Spirit for Girls in Grades 6 to 8

Our official launch for Fit Girls is on Thursday March 23.  This is a program that encourages our girls to have an active lifestyle, by running with girls and supervised by our "running" female teachers and staff.

Congratulations to our Chess players!

On February 24th, Silver Stream was represented at the Optimist Club Chess Tournament by 35 students in grade 4-8.  We are very proud of our students’ skill in chess demonstrated at the tournament, but also the support they demonstrated for team members throughout the tournament.  9 of our students have qualified for the Provincial tournament being held in April in Mississauga.  In addition, we were notified this week of the team results, and learned that our Junior team has won the Junior Banner for this regional tournament!  The Optimist Club will be presenting the Junior Banner to our students during morning recess on Thursday morning.  Congratulations to our Junior team as well as all our chess players.

Eco Team Message for World Water Day!

Today is World Water Day and the theme for 2017 is wastewater. Let’s help reduce waste from plastic water bottles at Silver Stream! The Eco Team has a bold goal and they want our school to be 100% plastic water bottle-free. That means that by the end of April we hope to see no more disposable plastic water bottles.

You may lean towards drinking water from disposable water bottles rather than turning on the tap, however, that’s all that bottled water is -- tastier tap water bottled in an unnecessary plastic container. These plastic water bottles amount to 17 million barrels of oil to produce it. That’s enough to fuel one million cars for a year! Furthermore, it takes three times the amount of water to produce it rather than fill it. The resources wasted from the production of water bottles is not the only environmental harm they cause -- where the bottles end up is also a huge problem. These bottles can be recycled, yet a large portion still ends up in landfills. This creates unnecessary waste when they can be easily reduced by turning on the tap.

Tap water is also safer than one may think. They require an intricate and strict treating process that filters, disinfects, purifies the water before it enters your home. It’s also tested every day. You may not enjoy the taste, but a simple filter or softener and boiling the water will do the trick. Another bonus -- tap water is much, much cheaper than bottled water.

With all these benefits in mind, the choice is obvious. Tap water is just as safe as bottled water, is more sustainable, and it's easier on your wallet compared to bottled water. If you previously drink bottled water, we ask that you make the switch and purchase a reusable water bottle in place of it.

Silver Stream also has an exciting announcement to help achieve our goal...

We are selling our own Silver Stream Falcon stainless steel reusable water bottles!
It is a silver metal bottle with our school logo in navy blue and a sleek design. It also includes an attached carabiner to hook onto your bags.

If you or your child is interested in purchasing one, come on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during morning recess in front of the library to do so. They cost $10 each and there is only a limited supply! The proceeds will be going to the Eco Team to fund their hard work and a portion will also be donated to Water Aid Canada.
We hope to see you everyone make an effort to use only reusable water bottles!

Thanks,
The Eco Team

Prevention of Lice

Whenever returning from a break, it is always a good idea to check your child's head for lice. As we do have confirmed cases of lice in our building, please take time to check your child's hair.  If you discover live lice or nits (eggs) in your child's hair, please inform the school office.  Please read the information below so that you are informed.

Naw Ruz ~ Happy New Year!

On behalf of the staff at Silver Stream PS,  we wish all of our families celebrating Naw Ruz, a very happy celebration!

Naw Ruz ("New Day") is the Baha'i and Iranian new year, which falls on the date of the vernal (spring) equinox and symbolizes the renewal of the world after winter. For most Iranians, Naw Ruz is the first day of Farvardin, the first month of the Iranian solar year. Since ancient times, it has been the great national holiday of Iran, the only holiday celebrated by more than one religious group. During this day people join in making a fresh start, full of joy and hope for the coming year. Families and friends may gather at a celebratory dinner wearing new clothes and offering gifts to the children present. The table is decorated with fruit, coloured eggs, sweets, as well as symbolic objects such as holy book and a mirror.

Moving?

At this time of year, we begin to determine our enrolment for the next school year.  Since enrolment determines the staffing we receive, it is important that we keep an accurate record of any families who may be moving and therefore will not be attending Silver Stream PS in September.  If you know that your child will not be attending Silver Stream PS in September, please call our school office and let us know.  We appreciate your attention to this.

Thank you.

Congrats to our Robotics Team!

Yesterday our Intermediate Robotics team participated in a region-wide tournament and received a SILVER standing.  Congratulations to our students! Thanks to our teachers Ms. Daryanani, Ms. Karalis and Mr. Martell for coaching and supporting our students.
