Gr 7 & 8 Science Fair
Silver Stream P.S. is excited to announce
our Annual Science Fair for Grade 7
& 8 students on Thursday, February,
18, 2016 taking place in our gym.
The fair will be open to family and friends
from 8am Thursday morning until 5pm.
Why is a Science Fair so important?
Providing a meaningful and engaging
intermediate science and technology program is a challenging task.
Project-based science and technology is the natural culmination of a program
that involves students in developing inquiry and design skills. These skills
help students to connect science and technology to each other and the outside
world. Students selected from one of three different inquiries; 1) Research
based 2) Innovation or
3) Experimental; for their projects.
What Happens to Our School Fair Project
Winners?
Through authentic investigations, students
constructed an understanding of how science works, and developed critical
thinking skills that will serve them well in their future endeavours. Award
winners from our school-based fair will be competing in the Regional Science
Fair taking place in April. This science
fair includes all schools in the York Region area competing to receive an award
and continue on to the Canada Wide Science Fair.

REMINDER for Parents of Grade 4 and 5 Students
All students in grade 4 and 5 will be attending the ROC during the morning of Friday February 12 for tubing, tobogganing and skating. If your child doesn't have skates, he/she can participate in just tubing and tobogganing. It will be cold, so please ensure your child is dressed for the weather. It is a good idea to send extra mittens and socks to keep dry and warm. Students need to take a nutritious snack with them. They will eat lunch at school when they return.

Bake Sale on Wednesdays
Dear Parent/Guardian,
The High Five Club at Silver Stream will be
fundraising to support people less fortunate than us. Last year the Me to We club raised enough
money to build a school in Ecuador. This
year the club is hoping to raise money to provide mosquito nets for people
living in areas with mosquito borne diseases like Malaria and the Zika
virus. We will also be putting aside
some money to invest in the KIVA program that lends money to people that need
help starting a farm or business in developing countries. This money will be paid back by the recipient
when they start generating income. In
this way the Helping Hands club can continue to help others.
Starting on February 10 and continuing every
Wednesday till the Wednesday before March break, March 9, the Helping Hands
club will be running a bake sale to raise money for this project. Thank you for your support of our efforts.
Lunar New Year Feb 8
To all of our families who celebrate Lunar New Year, on behalf of Silver Stream PS, we would like to
wish you a very happy celebration.
The lunar new year is the day after the new moon, marking the beginning of the new lunar year. This is the beginning of year 4714 in the Chinese calendar. It is a time for renewal and personal relationships, and pledges of prosperity.
Roots of Empathy in Grade 5
ROOTS OF EMPATHY
RACINES DE L’EMPATHIE
ROOTS OF EMPATHY is a program made for classrooms where Mrs. Lucas, Mother Ashleigh and Baby Bennett come to the classroom and teach the students about empathy. Baby Bennett shows us how to care for him which is showing empathy.
During roots of empathy the students learn about and study the baby for one lesson, during Baby visits. We sing songs, make the baby do exercises, let the baby play with toys, and just watch
the baby so we can examine the baby’s reactions. Babies might cry because they are hungry, need to change .etc, if that doesn’t work try rocking the baby, singing a song. Baby Bennett shows his emotions by his facial expressions and making sounds and this shows us how he is feeling. We learn we must read facial expressions on others to know how their feelings so that we can help them.

Primary Performance today
Today, our primary students attended a performance by Xiden Lin, in celebration of the Lunar New Year. Ms. Lin has a background in opera and is a parent in our school. She graciously, on very short notice, sang some traditional songs from her Chinese culture for our students and our students shared some traditions about the Lunar New Year. Thank you Ms. Lin!

Winter Walk on Wednesdays!
Our Eco team here at Silver Stream would like to continue to encourage our students who do not take the bus, to walk to school. Winter is no stranger to Canadians and this winter so far, has made it easy to get on our feet and walk to school. It keeps us healthy and reduces the traffic around the school, making it a safer place. So don't forget, to WALK on Wednesday and every day if you can.

PIZZA LUNCH REMINDER
Pizza lunch order forms for the remainder of the school year are due to your child's teacher on Tuesday February 2.
Message from our Trustee Carol Chan
Although winter still feels far from over some days, we are
now halfway through the school year. With report cards coming home, this
is a good time to review progress and celebrate what your children have learned
both inside and outside of the classroom. This is also a good time to set goals
for the months ahead.
One of our goals set out in the Board of Trustees’ Multi-Year
Plan is to “continuously increase student achievement and well-being
through a culture of caring and learning.” Developing this supportive
culture includes engaging parents/guardians and other members of the school
community in public education and working together to create safe and
supportive school environments that enable students to thrive.
As parents/guardians, there are many ways you can get
engaged in your child’s education and support their learning, including talking
with them about school, communicating with teachers, attending school events or
school council meetings, and volunteering in the school. However you get
involved, know that you are making a difference.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish you all the best
an enjoyable and successful second term.
