Math Olympics
On Saturday, four of our intermediate students participated in a Math Olympics at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. Students from Silver Stream were selected based on tryouts to solve multiple problems. The students competed against 24 schools from across the province. Math Olympics consists of couple partner challenges, an individual component and a team relay challenge. Congratulations to Elijah for receiving the highest scoring for a Grade 7 student! The team received an award for winning the team relay challenge solving 16 problems in an hour! The competition was fierce and we are so proud of the team. Congratulations to Jessica G., Elijah L., Lana B., and Yang C. Thank you to Ms. Sun for providing our students with the opportunity.

Early Release on Wednesday June 29
All schools in the York Region District School Board are
committed to improving student achievement and well-being. On Wednesday,
June 29th, 2016 an early release day will take place to allow elementary
teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of
that day. These meetings will allow for
school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and
revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition
activities that support student success.
As has been our practice in the past, students will attend
school during the morning of Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at
11:05am. Arrangements will be made to ensure that
students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation
at this time. Parents/guardians whose
children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to
address this change in schedule.
Jump Rope or Hoops for Heart
It was warm but students persevered to exercise their heart! A heart felt thank you to Ms. Andrade for organizing the event for our school. Any donations for the Heart and Stroke foundation will be accepted until Thursday. Thank you to all of our families for your support.
School Cash online
A few weeks ago, information went home about School Cash online. YRDSB is encouraging all schools to go cashless where possible. A student number was provided to you in the information that went home. If you have not yet had the chance, we encourage you to sign up for this new online system. If this system is not appropriate for you, we will continue to provide you with hard copies.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Bike to School Week Coming up!
Bike to School Week (May 30-June 3, 2016) is a celebration of cycling and
active transportation with the goal of increasing the number of children who
bike to school. School boards, public health units, NGOs, municipalities,
and regions across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area are working with Smart
Commute to coordinate this second
annual Bike to School Week.
Research shows that biking to
school improves children’s physical and mental health, and academic
performance, while also reducing traffic congestion (and related safety and air
pollution effects) in school neighbourhoods. Find out more about benefits here.

Congratulations to our Grade 7 & 8 Musicians!
Today our Grade 7 and 8 students in our Band participated in Music Alive. This is an opportunity for them to perform in front of an adjudicator who provides feedback on how they are playing. Our Grade 8s received a level of GOLD and our Grade 7s received a level of SILVER. In addition to an acknowledgment of how well they played, they will receive recorded feedback on the specifics of how they can improve in their practice.
Thank you to Mr. Smith and Ms. Appolloni for providing this opportunity to our students and of course, for your guidance and teaching. Thank you to our students for their hard work and motivation to achieve in music.

In ancient times, Chinese explorers visited many places in the world, from Africa to Australia. This music performance introduced our students to different cultures through the experience, discoveries, and travels of the Silk Road Duo. The introductions to the various instruments used and the compositions were delivered in French. Merci to Madame Barell for organizing this for our students.

Money for McMurray
Dear families of Silver Stream PS,
Fort McMurray, a city in Alberta, Canada, has been
destroyed because of forest fires. Many
families have lost their homes because of the fires. It is not safe to stay in Fort McMurray so
many families are leaving the city for safer places. At Silver Stream, we want
to help these families. We will be
having a Money for McMurray fundraiser this week only. Please consider donating your change to help make a change in Fort McMurray. There will be a box in your child's classroom starting
today. Drop in your coins in the
schoolhouse boxes this week. Thank you
Silver Stream for caring!
We appreciate your support in helping our students demonstrate compassion towards others.

Music Monday across Canada
Music Monday is an annual initiative that brings together thousands of students, musicians, parents and community members across the country to celebrate the gift of music in our lives, on the same day at the same time.
Yesterday, Silver Stream participated in this wave of music across Canada, with many of our students from different grades, and our teaching staff performing a variety of songs with a wide selection of instruments. Our teaching staff even performed a song! The performance ended with a whole school song "We Are One".
Thank you to our Music Teachers Mr. Jim Smith and Ms. Dalia Appolloni for their time in supporting and facilitating Music Monday in our school.
