Harriet Tubman peformances @Silver Stream

Today, all of our students had the privilege of seeing a performance by Ms. Leslie McCurdy.  The focus of each performance is to bring awareness of heroine Harriet Tubman to life and the larger issue of slavery, racism and prejudice in our history.  Harriet Tubman was an American slave, who not only rescued herself from slavery, but returned a number of times to save other people from a life of slavery, by leading them to freedom in Canada using the Underground Railroad.

So, what did you do at school today ?...Questions for the dinner table:

Grades 1-3:  Why do you think Harriet is a hero?  Tell me about the dolls you saw today in the performance.

Grades 4-6:  What can you tell me about Harriet Tubman's life?  How did she lead slaves to freedom?  Why was that important ?

Grades 7-8: What can you tell me about the four women that were portrayed today in the performance?  How did she play four different women?  What do you think the message of her performance was?

Casual Lunchtime Supervisors Needed

During the lunchtime (11:55am-12:55pm) , our students are supervised by lunchtime supervisors hired by the YRDSB and it is a paid position.  Many of the lunchtime supervisors are often parents or other members of the community.  At this time, we are in need of casual lunchtime supervisors.  Casual lunchtime supervisors are called when the regular supervisors are not able to come to work.  If you are interested in finding out more information about this position, please call the school office.

Article: Parenting Style

Parenting is one of the most challenging and important jobs in life.  I'm sure we all wish that raising a child came with a manual.  To make it more challenging, every child is different. The following article is a short interesting read on a few parenting styles that may not be in the best interest of our children.  http://theconversation.com/helicopter-snowplow-or-free-range-whats-your-parenting-style-15123

NEW Lunchtime Programs ~ Registration forms available Monday Jan 11

Extreme Cold

Happy New Year!  Today, with the wind chill, the temperature hovered between -24C and -27C and students remained indoors.  Because we do try to always provide our students with time for outdoor play, please ensure that your child(ren) always comes to school dressed appropriately for the weather.

The following is an excerpt from the YRDSB policy on extreme weather conditions:

Extreme hot or cold weather conditions, as well as the level of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, may have an impact on the health and well-being of children and adults in our schools and workplaces. Weather conditions can change throughout the day. When weather conditions are questionable, staff can consult Environment Canada at www.weatheroffice.gc.ca for information, as well as www.theweathernetwork.com for their local forecast, including the UV index. There is no Board-wide temperature or UV Index threshold for the automatic suspension of outdoor activity based on weather conditions. As with any extreme conditions at school, principals are responsible for responding to the individual needs of their students and staff. This make take the form of indoor recess breaks or changes in schedules for sporting events or any other action the principal deems appropriate to respond to the conditions. During extreme weather conditions, the following guideline for cold weather is used.

When the temperature and/or wind chill are minus 20 degrees Celsius or below, outdoor activity may be limited or students may not go outside.  Extreme cold weather may include, but is not limited to, blizzards, freezing rain, ice pellets, rain, hail, heavy snow/squalls/blowing snow, ice, thunderstorms, lightning and extreme winds/wind chill.
