Imaging that detects if a
patient’s breast cancer treatment is working after just one week of therapy. A
pre-leukemic stem cell that can identify the disease before it even begins.
Utilizing the 30-billion data points of a patient’s sequenced genome to determine
why some cancer tumours become resistant to drugs and others don’t.
These are but three exciting
ways in which cancer research today is making a difference through funds raised
by The Terry Fox Foundation and now invested by the Terry Fox Research Institute.
We’ve never understood cancer better and we are closer now to achieving more
cures than we have ever been before.
Since Terry began his
5,373-km run in St. John’s, Newfoundland more than $700-million has been raised
in his name for cancer research. This money has been used to fund the most
promising and innovative research in Canada over the last 35 years.
“At the time that Terry
Fox ran, I don’t think a lot of people talked about cancer. It was like so many
diseases today that suffer from public misconception — people just didn’t talk
about it. Something Terry Fox did was cast a really bright light on the fact
that cancer is a real problem, and one we all need to grapple with. It’s not a
rare disease or a rare set of diseases, it’s very prevalent.”

Our students had an amazing time participating
in our annual Terry Fox Run. This was our 11th year running and
collecting donations for the Terry Fox Foundation. We are continuing to
look for your support by donating to our Silver Stream page at http://www.terryfox.ca/SilverStreamPSRichmondHill.
Thank you for your generosity.
