Harriet Tubman peformances @Silver Stream

Today, all of our students had the privilege of seeing a performance by Ms. Leslie McCurdy.  The focus of each performance is to bring awareness of heroine Harriet Tubman to life and the larger issue of slavery, racism and prejudice in our history.  Harriet Tubman was an American slave, who not only rescued herself from slavery, but returned a number of times to save other people from a life of slavery, by leading them to freedom in Canada using the Underground Railroad.

So, what did you do at school today ?...Questions for the dinner table:

Grades 1-3:  Why do you think Harriet is a hero?  Tell me about the dolls you saw today in the performance.

Grades 4-6:  What can you tell me about Harriet Tubman's life?  How did she lead slaves to freedom?  Why was that important ?

Grades 7-8: What can you tell me about the four women that were portrayed today in the performance?  How did she play four different women?  What do you think the message of her performance was?
