Strike letter from our director

Dear Families,

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has provided notice that they will be starting a full strike – withdrawal of all services – across the province on Monday, October 7, 2019.

As mentioned previously, in York Region District School Board, CUPE is comprised of Caretakers, Maintenance, Educational Assistants (EAs), Designated Early Childhood Educators (DECEs), Child Youth Workers (CYWs), Clerical staff, Information Technology (IT) and other support staff members.

You are strongly encouraged to begin making alternate childcare arrangements for your children prior to the strike beginning Monday, October 7, 2019. This strike action may result in school closures. More information will soon be available as we consider the effect of the full strike.

We will continue to update you and will provide as much information as possible. You can find previous updates, as well as more information about the labour issue, on the Board website: www.yrdsb.ca.You may also follow our Twitter account @yrdsb for immediate updates.

We recognize this situation is disappointing; your child’s safety continues to be our first priority.

Sincerely,
Louise Sirisko

Message from Our Trustee

Message from Our Trustee

I am so pleased to welcome all of our new and returning families to another school year. As your school board trustee, it is my role to advocate for quality public education in York Region, and to ensure that our students remain at the centre of all of our decision making. The Board of Trustees makes policy and budget decisions, and communicates with the public, among other responsibilities.

We are also responsible for setting direction for the school board, through our Multi-Year Strategic Plan. This plan sets out four priorities: Foster Well-Being and Mental Health, Build Collaborative Relationships, Champion Equity and Inclusivity, and Empower Ethical Leadership.

As we start the new school year, I want to highlight the importance of relationships. We want to build and maintain relationships with our families that are built on trust, respect and responsive communication. To support that, I will continue to keep you informed of our work and priorities, and I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. You can also find the message from the Chair of the Board on the Board’s website.

In addition, I invite you to share your feedback on our Board policies. Policies govern everything from field trips, school volunteers, equity and inclusive education, student discipline and much more, and we greatly value input from families on these important matters. We regularly post on our website the policies that are under review and available for comment as well as information about how to share your feedback. I hope you will take a look.

I know school staff are excited to welcome back students, and I look forward to meeting more of our families throughout the upcoming school year. I encourage you to build a relationship with the staff members and community at your school. There are so many different ways to get involved and support your child’s education. I hope you have a great start to the school year and wish you a happy, safe and successful year ahead.

SILVER STREAM WOULD LIKE TO SAY "EID MUBARAK" TO ALL THOSE FAMILIES WHO CELEBRATE EID AL-FITR!!

Thursday, 30 May 2019

A Message From Our Trustee

As we near the end of the school year, this is a good time to celebrate all your child has learned and achieved. I hope that you have seen evidence of their growth and learning throughout the year.

Supporting the well-being and achievement of our students is a partnership with families and communities, and I want to thank you for all that you do to help strengthen our schools and support your child’s learning. We know that when you ask your child about their learning, help them make connections or participate in school events, our students and our schools benefit.

I look forward to continuing to build relationships with families over the summer months and in the 2019-2020 school year. As we go into the summer, there are many opportunities to continue supporting your child’s learning - whether helping to plan a family trip, visiting a local museum, reading a book or participating in one of the many exciting summer learning programs offered through the Board. I hope that whatever you have planned, you have a safe and enjoyable summer.

I would also like to offer a special congratulations to the graduating class of 2019. We wish you all the very best as you move on to this next phase of your life. We look forward to welcoming back all of our new and returning families in the fall.

A message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees is also available on the Board website at www.yrdsb.ca.

SILVER STREAM PRIDE FLAG RAISING

Silver Stream Public School is thrilled to announce that it will be raising the Pride Flag tomorrow, May 30th, in the morning at 10 a.m. We will be flying the flag to show our commitment to a safe school environment. The York Region District School Board believes that Equity and Inclusive Education are the foundation for excellence. We believe that all students must be treated with respect and dignity and have access to schools where they are safe, welcome, accepted and included.

Flying the Pride flag does the following:
  • demonstrates our commitment to eliminating harmful biases and prejudice that lead to discrimination and exclusion of our 2SLGBTQ+ students, staff and families.
  • signals our commitment to upholding the principles outlined in the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms which reflect the values held by Canadians and Ontarians.
  • aligns with the Director's Annual Plan which identifies Equity and Inclusivity as a priority area.
We also recognize the diversity within our 2SLGBTQ+ communities and acknowledge the presence of indigenous, racialized, disabled, and other diverse identities.

Thank you for your support of this very important step forward in making our school a safe place for all.

Accommodations for Fasting Students

RAMADAN

Tonight marks the beginning of Ramadan and the possibility that several students in our school may be fasting during the school day. Mr. Innes and I wanted to make it clear to those families that we will be doing everything we can to provide an environment for students where they feel safe to practise their religion and have their well-being cared for as well. We have been speaking to teachers and ensuring that there is a thorough understanding of  Ramadan, fasting, and the accommodations that must be put in place.

The following accommodations are being provided for these children:

1) An alternative space (room 107) for fasting students to come, talk to each other, play games, read or do their work. It is not mandatory for fasting students to go to this room, only if they desire it.

2) The opportunity to stay inside for recesses and abstain from physical education if it is too strenuous. Please be rest assured that no student will be penalized or have marks affected by non-participation due to fasting.

3) As in every other day of the year, there is a prayer room for any students or staff to use for prayer or reflection.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or Mr. Innes if you have further questions or accommodation suggestions that we have not thought about.

All the best,
Trish Yeates

Message From Our Trustee

March 2019 – Trustee Greetings for School Newsletters

Message From Our Trustee

I hope everyone has had a great start to the second half of the school year. Over the past few months, I have had an opportunity to connect with families, students, staff members and with our broader community. I have seen a lot of exciting opportunities for students to explore their interests, celebrate their identities, and develop skills and knowledge that will benefit them in the future.

Many students are participating in skills competitions or other events where they problem-solve, innovate, collaborate and further develop their technical skills. Students compete in robotics, construction, hairdressing, transportation, 3D animation and much more. These events are among the many options available to help students explore different careers and pathways, and gain valuable experience. We are grateful for the support of community partners in helping to provide these great learning opportunities to our students.

I also want to express my appreciation to our broader school community. One of the priorities in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan is to build collaborative relationships. The relationships that our schools have with families is so important. There are many different ways you can be involved - talking to your child’s teacher, asking your child about homework, or volunteering on a field trip or the school council. Your contributions make a difference to your child’s success and to the success of our schools.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable March Break.

High Five Team Fundraiser

Dear Silver Stream families,

The High Five Team of Silver Stream is planning to support a First Nations school in Summer Beaver, by doing an initiative named ‘Tech for our Northern Neighbours!’

The First Nations School is less fortunate than us, and the High 5 club wants to donate technology to help them. Our goal by the end of this initiative, is to purchase laptops for use by the students at their school!

Students can purchase a bookmark and a gently used book of their choice, for only two dollars or donate any spare change, in front of the library!

This initiative will begin February 19, and will end on April 26, 2019.

Thanks again,

The High 5 Club

Interesting Article

School absenteeism can set off troubling chain of events, pediatricians say

It's the middle of winter and thoughts of a holiday are tempting. Many parents may think that missing a day of school here and there is no big deal for a child, but pediatricians warn absences can add up quickly and seriously impact a child for life.
"As early as kindergarten, missing more school affects things like third-grade reading scores, third-grade math scores," said Dr. Mandy Allison, one of the authors of a U.S. policy statement. "What we also know is that missing school in younger grades leads to missing school in older grades, and missing school in older grades is linked to school dropout."

Silver Stream Family Tree

Dear Families,

We are pleased to be starting the New Year off with a very exciting new initiative! The Silver Stream Family Tree will soon be displayed in our beautiful school but we need your help to make it grow. The Silver Stream Family Tree will feature pictures of all the diverse families of the students attending our amazing school.

The purpose of the Silver Stream Family Tree will be to display all of the families that make up our unique Silver Stream family. It is also a way to show our commonalities and celebrate the diversity and culture of the families in our school community. The family tree will also aim to solidify the connection between the home and the school. Our goal is to show that Silver Stream P.S. is a “home away from home” and that each child belongs here.

To support the growth of our family tree, we are asking that each child bring in a 4 x 6 photo of their family (1 photo per family) to post on our school’s family tree. Your family photo could include parents, step parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, pets, etc. Please send in a photo that does not need to be returned or a coloured photocopy.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact at school at (905) 508-5696.

Thank you for your support in this initiative. We look forward to seeing everyone’s photos!
